Pre-Super Bowl Sobriety Checkpoint Set for San Francisco on Saturday, February 5, 2011
A pre-Super Bowl sobriety checkpoint is set for San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 5, at Geary Blvd. and Steiner St. It begins at 8:30 p.m. and ends at 1 a.m.
“We’re out after football fans doing their celebrating early along with anyone else who makes the irresponsible decision to drink and drive,” said Capt. Al Casciato, who commands the San Francisco Police Dept.’s Traffic Company.
Casciato recommends appointing designated drivers well ahead of the football party, and treating them very well. “Buy them dinner and a tank of gas, give them the best seat in the house and see that their glasses are always full of soft drinks or juice.”
The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which advises motorists to dial 911 on their cell phones to report dangerous drivers.
