Subject: San Francisco Police Arrest Suspect In Jewelry Theft

On Friday, November 27, 2009, at approximately 4:00 p.m., two thieves attempted to steal a valuable diamond ring and a rare Rolex watch, from two separate jewelry stores located in Union Square.

One suspect, Shiji Chen, 11/21/1968 was arrested by an SFPD Tactical unit officer. He was later identified by Inspectors VanKoll and Repetto, as the suspect in a similar theft of a Rolex watch in Costa Mesa, California, earlier this month. The second male suspect had fled the scene prior to the officers arrival. He is described as Asian, 5’7” tall, 150 pounds, with black hair, a very neat haircut, and well dressed. They may also have two other accomplices, a white male and an African American male, who were seen in Costa Mesa. (No video or photographs are available at this time)

When Chen was taken into custody, he was in possession of several international currencies from Asia, Europe and Saudi Arabia, he also had numerous international identifications and documents indicating travel throughout the United States.

Chin was arrested and booked on attempted grand theft, attempted burglary and conspiracy. He was also charged with grand theft and burglary for the Costa Mesa theft.

San Francisco Police would like to remind retail and wholesale jewelers and businesses, to be aware of these types of thefts during this busy holiday season, and to alert Police immediately when suspicious activity is observed.

The San Francisco Police Department urges anyone who may have been the victim of a similar theft, to contact Inspector VanKoll at the Economic Crimes Unit, 553-1521.
