Subject:

San Francisco Police Arrest Suspect In July 1 Mission District Bicycle Collision Hit and Run

San Francisco police have arrested the suspect in a vehicular collision between a motorist and a bicyclist that occurred on July 1, 2009 at the intersection of Valencia and 18th streets. The suspect, a 16-year-old female Santa Rosa resident, surrendered to San Francisco police yesterday, August 6.

In the incident, the bicyclist, a 42-year-old San Francisco man with his four-year-old son riding behind him, were proceeding though the intersection on a green light when the motorist traveling westbound on 18th Street ran the red light, causing both the bicyclist and his son to fall to the pavement. The driver did not stop to render aid to the injured bicyclist or to exchange information. The bicyclist suffered a fractured back. His son was not injured. Both were wearing helmets.

The San Francisco Hit and Run Detail immediately initiated an investigation into the incident, and conducted a media campaign to obtain witness information. The investigation ultimately resulted in the identification and location of the suspect. The suspect and her family are cooperating fully with police.

The suspect has been charged with felony hit and run. The driving public is reminded that in a vehicular collision resulting in injury, if the offending party does not stop and render aid that person is subject to a felony charge. The felony charge could result upon conviction in a prison sentence, in addition to any civil consequences.
