PUBLIC AFFAIRS OFFICE
PRESS RELEASE

August 11, 2009
09-077

Subject:

Protective Security Detail

As a matter of policy, the San Francisco Police Department does not discuss
the deployment of Police resources to address threats against public
officials or facilities. Such disclosure could have a significant negative
impact upon the ability of the Department to protect these individuals or
institutions.

All threats against public officials and institutions are assessed and
appropriate security measures are initiated to ensure a safe environment.
In the case of elected officials, the department focuses on the threat
potential as it relates to the individual. It deploys resources to reduce
that threat, in whatever location these public officials may be. The San
Francisco Police Department has an obligation to protect public officials,
as they have responsibilities to the City twenty four hours a day, seven
days a week. Our City has seen acts of violence attempted and committed
against public officials in the past. Because of this, the San Francisco
Police Department must remain vigilant to potential threats against public
officials and respond accordingly, regardless of location.
