Subject:

DUI Checkpoint Saturday

There will be a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Saturday, May 30, beginning at 8:30 P.M. The location will be disclosed two hours prior to the start of the checkpoint operation. The enforcement operation includes law enforcement members from the San Francisco Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, the U. S. Park Police, and the Community College District police.

The recent traffic collision tragedy in the East Bay over the Memorial Day weekend brings home the reality that far too many people die as a result of impaired drivers, said Captain Greg Corrales of the SFPD'S Traffic Company and chairman of the San Francisco Avoid, the cooperative law enforcement effort that focuses on preventing DUI crashes.

If you are going to drink, make sure that you have a designated driver, Captain Corrales said. A perfectly sober designated driver does the trick every time. In a transit-friendly city like San Francisco, that driver could be a street car conductor, cab driver, or bus driver, in addition to a friend or relative.

Officers will be on the road again after DUI suspects over the Independence Day holiday, Friday through Sunday, July 3-5. A 16-day campaign follows, from August 21 to September 21.

The San Francisco Avoid is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
